Cyprus National Football Team Profile

Profile of the Cyprus national football team history top score most caps players most appearances, the Cyprus football association was founded on 1934 and represents governing body for the Cyprus federation football in international competition and is controlled by KON/CFA. Became a member of UEFA Affiliation in 1962 and FIFA Affiliation in 1948.

The Cyprus's team did the first official match against Israel, in a 1-1 score, as part of the FIFA World cup 1962 qualifying tournament. The first international victory was a 3-1 win against Greece on november 1963 in a friendly match. In 1974 the national squad notched one of their most famous wins when a team of part-timers downed a Northern Ireland side featuring legendary goalkeeper Pat Jennings and 1968 European Footballer of the Year George Best, 1-0 in Nicosia. Despite other similar triumphs on home soil, Cyprus had to wait until 1992 to record their first away success: 2-0 in the Faroe Islands.

With 57 clubs now directly affiliated to the CFA, and a further 300 linked indirectly through local amateur associations, the Cypriot league comprises four divisions of 14 teams. The season runs from mid-August to May. The CFA continually strives to enhance the standard of professional football in the country, in addition to developing youth and women's football, and futsal. The Cyprus national football team's home stadium in GSP Stadium in Nicosia, with some fixtures also taking place at the Antonis Papadopoulos Stadium in Lanarca.
